CAD Product Design Technologist/Engineer-Aurora

Job Category: Full Time

Based in Aurora and under the supervision of the General Manager, the CAD Product Design Technologist/Engineer position is responsible for the design and CAD drafting of new and existing products and will manage the company’s design projects. This position requires knowledge of mechanical design using a variety of materials and manufacturing processes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Produces aspects of mechanical designs and drawings in SolidWorks.
  • Organizes and maintains hard copy design files and 3D-CAD digital file databases for all projects.
  • Creates and manages design projects, ensuring appropriate workflow is achieved and projects are completed on time.
  • Produces detailed product rendering designs and engineering calculations and takes them to working manufacturing drawings in order to move design projects to production while ensuring compatibility with CNC programs and manufacturing processes.
  • Maintains change/revision control system for all design data.
  • Facilitates and ensures quality of design for drawings and graphic work produced.
  • Ensures that the projects' needs are met in terms of project work plan schedules and budgets.
  • Analyzes costs of production and materials and provides costing information to Operations team.
  • Works closely with Supplier partners, responsibly for Tools (vendor selection and tool/jig design), part design (repeatability of parts to print), and design related vendor corrective action.
  • Leads prototype development and manages project timelines and schedules to align with completion targets while maintaining strict confidentiality.
  • Maintains an excellent rapport with all customers, production staff and suppliers to ensure company image is maintained and sales goals are achieved.
  • Works with sales, ascertains customers’ needs and prepares renderings, approval drawings and specifications required to prepare proposals/estimates.
  • May attend sales calls as required.
  • Leads and tracks the preparation of annual Scientific Research and Experimental Development (SRED) claims by logging all SRED related work activities, components and test methods used.
  • Completes Design for Manufacturing & Assembly (DFMA) and Failure Mode & Effects Analysis (FMEA) as required on design projects.
  • Champions root cause analysis.

The successful candidate must be a top performer and must demonstrate the following:

  • Post-secondary degree/diploma in Mechanical Engineering or Mechanical Design using 3D CAD software (SolidWorks)
  • A minimum of 5-7 years’ experience in a product design and engineering role
  • Advanced knowledge of BOM creation, process costing, CAD library maintenance, make-to-order business processes and Project Management Software
  • Proficiency with 3D modeling in SolidWorks
  • Strong experience in maintaining change/revision control of design data
  • High level of proficiency using Microsoft Office
  • Strong understanding of materials and manufacturing processes as they impact design
