Food Access Coordinator

Role Description:

Local food bank requires a Food Access Coordinator  for an 8 month contract who will assist in the overall development and implementation of the Nourishing Possibilities Program which includes leading both the community garden and community kitchen programs. Nourishing Possibilities is a multi-faceted program designed to reach low and moderate income individuals residing in Georgina.  The initiative is committed to building food security by increasing access to nutritious food and by offering food skills training. 

Job description:

  • This is an 8 month contract position starting on March 3rd until October 31st 2014   -  15 hours a week
  • As a member of the program planning team, participate in the program development of both the community garden and community kitchen programs
  • Prepare and disseminate community garden/community kitchen application packages to participants
  • Create, for the community garden participants, a system for responsibility sharing & organize weekly trips for participants to the community garden
  • Oversee the maintenance and care of the community garden and ensure the garden is planted in a timely manner and that the garden is adequately watered, weeded and mulched throughout the season, and all end-of-season garden closing activities
  • Plan and coordinate various promotional events at the community garden & implementation of community garden workshops
  • Attain the Safe Food Handling certificate offered through the York Region Proton Kitchen Training Program
  • Organize and deliver monthly community kitchen sessions, including menu planning, kitchen preparation, cooking demonstrations and information dissemination to participants
  • Report regularly to the GCFP Executive Director on program activities and assist with fund-raising activities as needed

 

Qualifications and skills:

  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in community based food projects
  • Knowledge of organic gardening, composting, soil amendment strategies, knowledge of beneficial insects, succession planting and planting design
  • Experience in nutritious meal planning,  outreach, leading workshops, and presentations
  • Strong communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to work alone and as part of a team
  • Basic proficiency in Excel, Word
  • Have a valid Ontario Driver’s License and use of own vehicle

Some evening and weekend work will be required.   The successful applicant will need to provide a satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Security Check conducted by York Region Police.
